BaZi Chart Structure (Geju): Reading the Whole Pattern
Chart structure (格局, geju) is the overall pattern that tells you what a BaZi chart is built to do. It comes mainly from the month command, the exposure of its qi, and the strength of the Day Master. This guide covers the main structures and the mistakes that produce misleading readings.
What chart structure is
Chart structure (格局, geju) is the overall configuration of a BaZi chart. If the Day Master tells you who the chart is centered on, the structure tells you what the chart is organized around: authority, resources, output, wealth, or peer pressure.
Structure is not a personality type. It is a functional description that determines which element the chart needs and how luck cycles should be evaluated. Two charts with the same Day Master can have completely different structures, and therefore completely different favorable elements.
How structure is determined
Classical method starts with the month command (月令). The month branch is the season, and the season is the strongest single influence on the chart. The primary qi of the month branch is the first candidate for the structure.
- Identify the month branch and its primary hidden stem.
- Check whether that stem is exposed on the year, month, or hour stem.
- Check whether the Day Master is strong enough to use the structure, or whether the structure overwhelms it.
- Check for combinations, clashes, or transformations that change the month branch’s role.
- Decide whether the structure is regular (正格) or special (special structures such as 从格 or 化格).
The main structures
| Structure | Core logic | Typical theme |
|---|---|---|
| Direct Officer (正官格) | Rules and responsibility are central | Public trust, order, steady advancement |
| Seven Killings (七杀格) | Pressure and execution are central | Authority under stress, decisive action |
| Direct Wealth (正财格) | Managed resources are central | Stewardship, planning, reliable income |
| Indirect Wealth (偏财格) | Circulation and opportunity are central | Commercial instinct, networks, variable income |
| Direct Resource (正印格) | Support and learning are central | Credibility, mentorship, patient growth |
| Indirect Resource (偏印格) | Unconventional learning is central | Research, insight, specialized knowledge |
| Eating God (食神格) | Sustainable output is central | Craft, enjoyment, steady creativity |
| Hurting Officer (伤官格) | Expression and innovation are central | Originality, technical skill, challenge to authority |
| Jian Lu (建禄格) | The Day Master is in its own season | Self-reliance, capacity, peer dynamics |
| Yang Ren (羊刃格) | The Day Master is at maximum intensity | Drive, risk, need for channel and control |
The eight regular structures are built from the ten gods. Jian Lu and Yang Ren are special cases where the month branch is the Day Master’s own element, so the structure is about the Day Master’s own strength rather than an external function.
Regular and special structures
Most charts are regular structures: the month command produces a ten god that the chart can use. Special structures — 从格 (following) and 化格 (transformation) — occur when the Day Master is so weak or so dominated that it stops resisting and follows the dominant force, or when a combination genuinely transforms one element into another.
Special structures are over-diagnosed. A weak Day Master with heavy Officer is not automatically a “follow the Officer” chart; it may simply be a weak chart that needs Resource. The classical tests are strict, and a wrong special-structure call produces very misleading advice.
Why structure matters for the rest of the reading
Structure determines the favorable element (用神). If the chart is organized around Direct Officer, the question is whether Officer is supported and whether the Day Master can carry it. If the chart is organized around Hurting Officer, the question is whether output has a channel and whether wealth can receive it.
Structure also changes how luck pillars are read. A pillar that strengthens the structure can be excellent; the same pillar can be destructive if it attacks the structure’s core. Without a structure, luck readings become a list of generic adjectives.
Common mistakes
- Deciding structure by counting elements. The month command outranks raw counts.
- Ignoring whether the month qi is exposed. A hidden structure reads differently from a clear one.
- Forcing a special structure. 从格 and 化格 require strict conditions; most weak charts are simply weak.
- Treating the structure as a fixed identity. Structure describes function, not worth.
- Mixing schools without noticing. Some traditions weight the month branch differently, which changes borderline calls.
Frequently asked questions
What is Geju in BaZi?
Geju (格局) is the overall structure or pattern of a chart. It is determined mainly by the month command, the exposure of its qi, and the strength of the Day Master, and it decides which element the chart needs.
How many chart structures are there?
The eight regular structures plus Jian Lu and Yang Ren are the common set. Special structures such as 从格 and 化格 are added when their strict conditions are met.
Can a chart have more than one structure?
A chart can show a dominant structure with secondary themes. Classical texts also describe “mixed” structures where two functions compete, which usually makes the reading less clear.
Is chart structure the same as personality?
No. Structure describes what the chart is organized around and what it needs. Personality is read from the Day Master, the ten gods, and their interactions together.
Put this into practice
Generate your own chart and see how the Day Master, element balance, ten gods, and luck pillars actually appear in it.
